I guess there's some... holiday?
What the crap, people? The year is 2009. We are in a technological, civilised world. We have people who work all kinds of jobs at all kinds of hours. We have people of all races, creeds, religions, genders, and so forth. Why the flying flip can we not scrape together enough Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, atheists, and other sane folk to keep even one decent restaurant open on this particular evening –on a Friday, for love of "Bob" – near the end of the year? Not even Chinese places are open. Not even Chinese.Fail. Just... such friggin' fail, on levels I don't even want to begin to comprehend. Current Mood: dumbfoundedCurrent Music: internal soundtrack |

Am silly, as well, always post at the worst of times! Who is even up at 2AM on Christmas? :D I'm just too busy during the class quarter to think of anything that I can truly fill out posting, too exhausted in so many ways.. And I work nights so I'm usually most awake and aware right about now! Current Mood: silly |

Anyone need a computer/upgrade?
So, we've got a few spare computer parts laying around..! Such as a motherboard, power supply, box, video card, a couple of gigs of ram.. all suitable for a Core 2 Duo or Quad or whatever else might be laying around. So, we could do something like buy a cheap Core 2 Duo off of Ebay or a lower model on Newegg or the like for somewhere in the $50s-ish range easily enough, and pretty much have a working computer for someone who needs one! It could be a big upgrade for anyone still on a single core chip, an old P3 or 4, or original Athlon or whatever, and I hate to see these extra parts laying around. Anyone want such a thing, and want to work with us on it? Hell, it could even be a gift, I just want to see it all put to good use! ------ Update - Here's pretty much what I could do - Intel G31 Motherboard 2 gigs of DDR2 800 Ram Generic DVD-Rom drive (IDE) (Could get a DVD-RW if I replaced the Media PC's one with a cheap Blu-Ray drive, which is ultimately planned anyhow..) A 200 gig SATA or IDE drive, either or! A simple case w/250W power supply (might actually have a better power supply sitting around, but this is a prelim look..) A Geforce 6800GS 512 meg (also could upgrade either from the 8800GT, 8800GTS, or 4830 on one of three available computers if something more game-ready might be desired..!) And I've got a spare Keyboard even, if that were needed! Could get a mouse for cheap, though might have a spare MS Mouse actually somewhere.. hmm.. See, all I technically need to get is the CPU, which on Newegg is anywhere from $50 up for a Dual-Core. For $94, it could be an E6500 at 2.93GHz, which would be plenty fast for most things for sure! But even an E3300 at 2.5 for $62 would be pretty solid, no? I do have a spare VX924 Viewsonic monitor, but its backlighting is having a hard time turning on. No problem once it is on, just ought to be kept on! Or I have another one of the same which has no problems at all, but I'd want to get another monitor to replace that if it were wanted! Then I would get a second of the Samsung monitors that I have so they would be even, like it was before, if I did that. Current Mood: chipperCurrent Music: Velvet Acid Christ - Vaporized |

Oh! And apparently it's my birthday today. =O.O= Spent most of the day playing Borderlands and packing for the flight to DC tomorrow. =>.>= Ah well. Not exactly big on these things, other than spending them with my family, of course (which is the plan tomorrow night ^^; ) |

Prrf! Another filk! This one's actually Christmas-related, too. =O.O= A friend of mine asked why I haven't done this song, as apparently every other filker has, and, well...I'm lazy. ;P But after a bored moment at work, I managed to get it done. ^^; So anyway, here's The 12 Days of Prrfmas, the final verse (due to the recursive nature of the song. =>.>= ): On the 12th day of Prrfmas, my sisters gave to me, 12 tasty milkshakes 11 fruity starcones10 mad scientist kits 9 prrflers prrfling 8 alternate forms 7 green lightsabres 6 prrfin' bakastomps Five. Christmas? Cards? OH SHI*...
Hello all. Sorry I haven't been posting much here... been... okay, honestly, been burying myself in Borderlands in between work and errands. I do love the game, but i see it's taking a toll on me doing anything outside of just blasting things. That said, I just found out something - Christmas is a WEEK AWAY. >_< Since it snuck up on me, I didn't get a chance to get cards out, so I won't be sending them out this year - there's no need to send me one as a result. However, if you already have, or you'll be a stubborn cuss and send me one ANYHOW, you WILL be geting a card back from me. It's my rule - if someone sends, I send back. It's very pleasant to be recognized and remembered, and I want tomake sure those who take the time to send me things get thanked and praised as well. So, if it's not too premature: Merry Christmas to everyone. Or Happy Hanuakkah. Or Killer Kwannza. Whatever holiday you want, or don't want, have a happy and joyous day! :) Current Mood: busy |

Coming down with a code.
For some time, I've desired a particular sort of small application, something for a system task that should be a lot easier than it is and would be easy to code up well. Every existing app either has severely limited functionality or a GUI designed by... well, a programmer. This means that if I want it done right, I'll have to do it myself. I'd really like to have something small I can distribute easily, The catch is, my Windows programming experience is split evenly between Visual Basic 3.0 and Perl/Tk, and somehow I doubt either will work well for this. I turn to you, my good friends and loyal readers, to help me in this endeavour, mostly by suggesting the best way to get it done right. Points of note:
- It's explicitly a GUI application, though the GUI will be as simple as possible; system-standard widgets are preferred. (Don't you hate when an app uses its own custom fileselectors and such?)
- It's for Windows first and foremost. I'm not planning for this to be cross-platform, but honestly, there's not much preventing it.
- It'll utilise user-provided regular expressions, so it needs as good a regex library as possible.
- I want it to be as spartan, lean, and unobtrusive as possible, meaning minimal requirements. Expecting a JRE isn't too bad. Expecting an ActivePerl installation is very bad.
- My Visual Basic knowledge is thirteen years old and my Perl knowledge is five years old.
- I do have a pretty solid grasp of object-oriented programming concepts.
- I'm willing to learn a new language to do this as long as it's not a direct descendant of C. Seriously, man. C?
- The absolute total monetary expenditure I'm willing to put forth on the project is for one (1) O'Reilly book. If I need to buy anything else, I'll spend the money on Thai food instead and deprive the world of my coding genius.
- I don't mind asking for help, but I'd really like to code this myself, mostly so I can make changes and additions as I see the need. Note to be rude, but... if you think you can code it for me, please don't make the offer unless you want me to micro-manage and pay you no more than the cost of the aforementioned O'Reilly book.
All that having been said, do folks have suggestions for the easiest way to get up and running with this, or what points I'll need to be more flexible on? Current Music: Duran Duran - Greatest - Notorious |

A spicy word of wisdom.
In the past, people have asked me, "Keet, why is it you like spicy food so much?" I explain it as such: "Think of it like pickles. Usually, you get pretty tasty pickles, but they're a little mushy. Now, imagine a nice crisp pickle that's just as tasty. You want it more. It's not because 'crunchy' is a flavour; it's because there's an additional level of sensation for your mouth to enjoy. Same with spicy food. It doesn't have to be spicy, but why the heck not?" It's a solid enough explanation, and the only one approved by the National Assosication of Growers of Burny-Tasting Things. There's a word of warning to be had, however. Sometimes, adventurousness can come at a cost, and frequently that cost could have been avoided with careful consideration of the potency of such potables. One notable example comes to mind. If, when preparing macaroni and cheese for one's dinner, one decides to use a little Dave's Gourmet Insanity Sauce to liven things up a little, that's a good idea – quite possible the best idea. If the bottle is mishandled, however, and a great glistening blast of that capsaicin-overloaded condiment ends up in the bowl instead of a couple meek drops, this is neither the time for foolish courage or miserliness. Do not simply stir it in and figure it'll be "a little stiff". Scoop as much of the blob out as possible, then taste the dish with the remainder. It's always possible to add more Dave's. It's never possible to extract the Dave's back out when one can taste more Dave's than cheese. Eating the whole bowl at that level is neither brave nor sensible. Think of it like this. If a friend says, "Hey, I've got this great silicone toy, and I'd love to shove it up your rear and hear you squeal in delight," then the right answer is probably to enthusiastically agree and, for the sake of wringing every bit of enjoyment out of your miserable and fleeting mortal shell, have a great time with it. If the toy is larger around than the average head, however, there's no shame and infinite wisdom in saying, "Whoa there, Wilbur; I know my limits! We gotta work up to this slowly!" The Electric Keet has spoken. Nyaah. Current Mood: sageCurrent Music: Queen - A Kind of Magic - Pain Is So Close to Pleasure |

Still here! Geeze, nothing for nearly a month and a half, and that shortly after a post talking about how I should write here weekly.
As a quick update—which I seriously need to get back into the habit of doing here, don’t I?—I’m heading to Florida starting this coming Friday the 18th, and will be there for a week. My new job is somewhat less crazy now than it was over much of November, but during November it was… we’ll just say really hectic.
It often seems to be the case that people get more done on personal projects when they’re getting busy with other projects, and to some degree that’s even true with me. I’ve made progress on Claw & Quill in the last two weeks or so that I’m proud of, although a lot of it’s awfully nerdy stuff at this point. I’m going to put out another quasi-call for people who are interested in helping with coding. The site’s being written in Python using the Django framework; experience with either one isn’t strictly necessary (although it’s obviously helpful). There’s also going to be call for work with Javascript and jQuery (and jQuery UI), HTML 5, and other such markup-savvy stuff. A couple people have expressed interest in the past in a general way; if you’re still interested—or have become interested since—give me an idea of what you’re actually interested in and I’ll try to bring things to a point where I can start getting people on board shortly after the holidays. |

My life according to Pink Floyd
In lieu of real content again, more guided meditations in alphanumerics, this time via tracerj, ceruleanst and glashund. The instructions: Using only song names from ONE ARTIST, cleverly answer these questions. Try not to repeat a song title. It's a lot harder than you think! Repost as "My life according to (band name)" For this exercise, I will be using Pink Floyd, both due to my uncanny connection to that band and the recent acquirement of their full discography. • Are you a male or female? Wot's uh...The Deal? • Describe yourself: One of the Few • How do you feel: High Hopes • Describe where you currently live: Marooned • If you could go anywhere, where would you go: Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun • Your favorite form of transportation: Interstellar Overdrive • What did you get on your last Birthday? Candy and a Current Bun • Your best friend is: Celestial Voices • You and your best friends are: Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast • What's the weather like: Storm Signal • Favorite moment: When the Tigers Broke Free • If your life was a TV show, what would it be called: Keep Talking • What is life to you: Your Possible Pasts • Your last relationship: Poles Apart • Your fear: Brain Damage • What is the best advice you have to give: Shine On You Crazy Diamond • Thought for the Day: Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert • How I would like to die: Coming Back to Life • My soul's condition: Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict • Most Faithful Companion: Don't Leave Me Now • My motto: Take up Thy Stethoscope and Walk |

In which I create an interactive system
So I picked up something from fenrisulfr and it wasn't a holiday gift. The rules: Leave me a comment saying "SCIENCE!". I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better. Update your journal with the answers to the questions. Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions. And the questions: Q 1. I know you aspire to start glass work. What are your greatest ambitions if/when you get really damn good at it? A1. I have no idea how far this aspiration will go, considering how expensive the cost of entry is in this field, but given the equipment/training/time, my aspiration would be to make something that Dale Chihuly would want to own. Q2. Favorite scientific law, principle, or theory, and why! A2. Tough one. I have to say out of all of it, Bernoulli's Principle always comes to mind first and foremost. Perhaps it's my bent towards aviation science or perhaps fluid dynamics in general, but there's a simple elegance to it and it can do so much for one simple little expression. Also it's kinda one of the most misunderstood principles around. Q3. Strangest food you've ever imagined trying to create. Or, hell, created? A3. Hands down, the curry cheesecake. I know it'll work in theory and I can probably make a recipe for it after a test cake or two, but the idea of a garam masala cheesecake with mango chutney topping... Never quite got up the gumption to actually go and make it yet. Some day... Some day... Q4. To reuse a question: YOU ARE STARTING AN ARMY. It can be made up of anything. ANYTHING. Tell me who or what is in it. A4. This one's easy. Spiderbees, Centibees, and a number of other things spliced with bees. But mostly spider bees. Venomous bite and sting. Collective web spinning. Swarming behaviors and stealth tactics all in one. Easily controlled by mechanical plants and pheromones. Serious terror factor in most people. It's kinda the reason for the title of my journal. Q5. And now for a reasonably vanilla question: are there any authors, artists, or creators that have changed your perception? If so, how and/or why? A5. It'd be easier to write out a list of authors and artists that haven't impacted me in some fashion or another. I mean, it is the job of an artist, whether they create with words or paint, to reach an audience. With that in mind, a quick hit-list of the most notable ones to come to mind and the reason why: 1. Some what sheepishly, I'll admit to being a Piers Anthony fan in my younger days. I'm still afflicted with the flaw Odious Personal Habit: Punning thanks to him. Not much into his works now, but at the time, there were certainly worse things I could have been reading. 2. Spider Robinson: Callahan's Crosstime Saloon found it's way into my life at a pretty important juncture during college. Probably moreso than any other piece of literature, that ominbus of short stories about a fictional bar drug my head out of a fairly dark dark place and time and helped me re-evaluate some core elements of myself. Sadly it only made my chronic mental illness involving punning worse. 3. Phil and Kaja Foglio: Numerous bits of work here between the two, I was a fan back when they were mostly noted for drawing art for Magic the Gathering and comics in Dragon Magazine and still a fan of their works now. If you're familiar at all with them and myself, I'm sure you'll probably see the influence immediately. 4. Tracy J. Butler: One of the very first "furry" artists I was ever aware of and now the artist behind one of my current favorite (if extremely slow updating and thus, perfectly named) comics Lackadaisy. If it wasn't for her, probably wouldn't have been involved in "the fandom" as I am and thus, would be out a good number of friends I enjoy the company of. Also a very talented traditional artist, for those that are kinda iffy about the anthropomorphic animals thing. 5. Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Warren Ellis, Grant Morison: Comicbook writers that really taught me to love comics. All of them have their quirks, short comings and personal foibles but they all have made highly influential media that has deeply impacted me in some fashion or another. There's a reason why about 70% of my comic collection is written by one of those four. |
